A busy few weeks

The last few weeks have been very busy at the bakery with lots of events on top of the day to day running of operations.

Scott judging one of the entries in the Poynton Bake Off

A few weeks ago we were delighted to judge and sponsor the Poynton Bake Off at the Poynton Methodist church.  Scott worked his way through a wide range of delicious cakes, canapés and other goodies along with one of Poynton’s Great British Bake Off stars, Ruth Clemens.  The fantastic winning team, the Victory Girls, who had created a wonderful spread in celebration of the WWII victory anniversary, will be treated to a baking masterclass from Scott later in the year.

Our stand in the beautiful Gorton Monastery

The same week, we got the chance to visit the beautiful Gorton Monastery as part of a local community organisation’s annual conference. We were taking part in their promotion of local food producers and as a potential supplier of their cafe development in Cheadle Hulme. We met loads of lovely people and the bread samples went down a treat!

Scott showing off more cake tasting skills!

More recently, we had the pleasure of being part of the fabulous Bramhall Duck Race as sponsors of the Great Bramhall Bake Off.  Yet again, as chief judge, Scott got to spend a hard afternoon eating cake!

The quality of the cakes entered into the Bake Off by the Bramhall public were amazing and it was great to be part of such a well organised and well supported community event, even in the cold and damp!  The winners also received the chance to spend a day in the bakery with Scott.

Our duck was much less successful…

We have also squeezed in a couple of talks to community groups and have loads more coming up later in the year.

We are now looking forward to the Bramhall festival coming up on 13 June. We will be out and about with a market stall (as well as in the bakery as normal) with some vintage inspired treats, vouchers and other goodies.  Come and see us and join in the fun of the festival.

The case for bread…

As seen in the latest issue of Inside Bramhall we have done a bit of research into the benefits of bread.

Bread seems to get a continuous bashing in the media at the moment. Whether it’s the latest diet or a celebrity backed craze, bread is often portrayed as a villain. Is this fair?

We are understandably, passionate about a good loaf of bread. We even started a business which strives to turn out the perfect loaf day after day. In defence of our beloved product, we thought we would do a bit of research about the benefits of bread. As a food type, it has survived millennia – this longevity must have some basis.

So why should this staple food continue to be on the menu as part of a healthy, balanced diet?

Fibre – bread can provide up to 20% of your daily recommended fibre intake, supporting a healthy digestive system. Breads packed with grains and seeds are even better and are great for providing a slow energy release.

Sugar – most bread is low in sugar, we only add sugar to a couple of speciality loaves.

Fat – bread is low in fat.

Essential minerals – bread can provide 20% of the recommended daily allowance of calcium and 10% of iron and folate.

Cost – even a good quality loaf of bread is a relatively low cost, nutritious food source.

Love – finally, what article about bread can exclude its emotional value. What is more comforting than a delicious slice of toast and butter or a tasty sandwich on soft fresh bread.

Hot Cross buns are back!

It’s that time of year again!  Our delicious hot cross buns are back.  Our buns are freshly baked each morning from our own special recipe, created from scratch in our bakery.  The chocolate ones are filled with chocolate chips – there is no fruit, just chocolate and lots of it (very decadent indeed!)  The fruit bun is lightly spiced to perfection and bursting with moist, juicy fruit.  Don’t miss out, they will be gone after Easter!

On a health kick?

We feel a bit lonely in January here in the bakery, as everyone goes on their New Year health kicks!  We’re with you and we very much believe in healthy eating and getting a good balance of food types made from quality, identifiable ingredients.  It’s pretty much what we are all about.

So, for January we thought we would tell you all about our range of fruit loaves.  After all everyone needs a treat and we think these are a pretty good option.

We make a range of five loaves – one for each day we are open.  (In fact the Muesli Loaf is so popular we make it twice a week!) Each one is bursting with generous helpings of fruit and made to our own unique recipe.

Tuesday – Muesli Wednesday – Date and Walnut Thursday – Cranberry Sourdough Friday – Dutch Fruit Saturday – Pear & Fruit, Muesli

In general we constantly strive to make a healthier loaf.  We have significantly reduced the salt content in all of our loaves over the last 12 months.  There is also no added sugar in any of the loaves (with the exception of the Dutch Fruit Loaf).

So, why not pop in and try one of our fruit loaves – we will be sampling the loaf of the day (if they’ve not all been snapped up!)  If you eat enough it might even count as one of your 5-a-day (or perhaps that’s pushing it….)

Happy New Year

Happy New Year to all of our customers!  Thank you for your support during 2014, we have loved being part of the community in Bramhall and now Poynton.  We are very much looking forward to 2015 – baking more delicious bread and creating new, tasty products.  After opening the new bakery in September, we are planning a quieter year… (so far!)

However, to keep us busy we do have a few new product developments and modifications in the pipeline already.  For example, we have been trialing a gourmet sausage roll, with a black pudding centre, in our Poynton shop and it has been very successful – it will definitely be making an appearance in Bramhall very soon!

For those of you on a new year health kick, our breads are lower salt than most and we have a number of healthier breads (the Seeded Multigrain, Wholemeal Crunch and Bramhall Bloomer are a few examples) and all of our fruit loaves except the Dutch Fruit Loaf have no added sugar, making them a good option for a sweet treat!

Finally, from 2 January, we are  going to be changing our opening hours in Poynton, closing at 3.30pm Tuesday to Saturday – we feel that this will better reflect the trading and baking hours in Queensway. Opening hours will be as normal in Bramhall.

It’s starting to feel a lot like Christmas at Bramhall Bakery.  The shops are decorated and more importantly we have started baking our Christmas products.  We have Christmas scrolls – a delicious spiced fruit dough filled with marzipan, the sweet mincemeat Christmas Jubilee and new for 2014 Christmas Mince Stars – a scrumptious pastry with mincemeat and custard.

We have Christmas sandwiches too – Turkey and Stuffing and Brie and Cranberry.

We are taking orders for 23 / 24 December – our Christmas order sheet is attached here for you to download  Christmas Order Sheet 2014
